English

It is our intent at Freeman Community Primary School to provide pupils with a high-quality education in English that will teach them to read, speak and write fluently. This will then enable them to communicate their ideas to others effectively and with clarity whether through discussion or the written word. A strong education in English will lay the foundations for our children to grow into positive, responsible people, who can work and co-operate with others while developing a wider range of knowledge and skills, so that they achieve their true potential.

The overarching aim for English in the national curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment. The national curriculum for English aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • read easily, fluently and with good understanding
  • develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
  • acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
  • appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage
  • write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
  • use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas  are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.

Twinkl Phonics and Rhino Readers

In Early Years and Key Stage 1 the children follow the Twinkl Phonics scheme.  This is supported by The Rhino Readers Reading scheme. Below is the presentation shared with parents about Twinkl Phonics and Rhino Readers in September 2022, as well as a copy of the actions for each phoneme and a glossary of the terminology used to teach phonics.

Additionally, the Parent Packs provided by Twinkl to support Phonics learning at home are below. For further information on each individual focus of learning, please scroll down to find the level your child is working at to locate the relevant page.
